Tzu Chi South Africa
Established 1992
Tzu Chi South Africa is the local chapter of the Buddhist Compassion Relief Tzu Chi Foundation — a global humanitarian organisation founded in 1966 by Dharma Master Cheng Yen in Taiwan. Operating under the philosophy of “Great Love” (Da Ai), the chapter is dedicated to alleviating suffering and promoting compassion through four main missions: Charity, Medicine, Education, and Humanistic Culture.
“tzu” (compassion) “chi” (relief)
Tzu Chi’s mission is “to relieve the suffering of those in need and create a better world for all,” serving “one and all in the spirit of one global family”
In practice, this means volunteers come from all backgrounds to offer aid and promote moral culture without proselytizing.

Over three decades the chapter has become “deeply rooted” in South African following Tzu Chi’s global “Four Great Missions” (Charity, Medicine, Education, Humanistic Culture) and related initiatives like disaster relief and environmental care
